Q & A with Kingsley Charles – Director of Administration So why was the new gantry built?
The gantries were planned to make existing space in the school available to staff and students. We are very pleased that they are now completed which will ensure safe evacuation routes while retaining the useful work areas.
Why this design?
This design has open gantries on the outside linking back to the stairways of each floor. This design and choice of finishing colours allow the structure to blend well with the main buildings. The spin-off from the design are partially covered car parks below the first floor gantry. It is also a fast paced construction option so that we could complete the project during the summer school holidays. The materials used are fire retardant, robust and durable, and these 2.1m (7 feet) wide gantries allow easy movement of large groups of students and staff.
When was the work done and how did it go?
During the long School Summer Holidays. The Schedule was as such; Friday 20 June 2008 – soil sampling and testing to ascertain engineering parameters for design of Pad Footings for structural columns. Fabrication of steel sections was done off-site and brought in and assembled.
Saturday 5th July 2008 – Site Work commenced;
Monday 7th July 2008 – Construction Work started; Wednesday 20th August
2008 - construction completed; Sunday 24th August 2008 – completed
project was handed over.
Thank you.
