After a year back in the UK, Jennifer has recently returned to Penang and Uplands. She has worked in Japan, Taiwan, Korea and Vietnam. She loves working with younger children. She is married with three young children. In the little spare time she has she can be found hunting around for a quiet corner to read a book. She also likes baking although can’t always claim the finished results look anything like the page in the cookbook!

A Malaysian citizen, Julliena Teh obtained her Diploma in Early Years Education from the London Montessori Centre, a Certificate in Pre-School Education (PTM), and has attended courses in the teaching of EFL at the British Council and mainstream ESL. Mrs. Teh has had experience teaching the IB Primary Years Programme since 2006 and she has been a dedicated teacher to very young children at Uplands for more than 3 decades. Mei Ling Teh

A Malaysian citizen, Mei Ling Teh obtained her Bachelors’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from University of Southern Queensland. After qualifying as a teacher, she has worked as a kindergarten teacher in the local early years’ setting before joining Uplands in 2012.

Dip Teaching

Sylvia Rajamoney, a Malaysian graduate with a Diploma in Teaching, served in Malaysian primary schools for six years, running the English and Music departments in the primary years and specializing in English Literacy and Music. After her bond with the government was over, she took a break from teaching and moved overseas. Upon her return, she joined Uplands as a Class Teacher in 2003.

Cassy Trauger

BA Early Childhood/Elementary Education, MLIS Library and Information Science

Cassy Trauger is originally from the United States of America. She taught in Germany for four years, at The International School of Hannover Region, as a PYP teacher in fifth grade Language Arts, Art and Drama. She obtained her Bachelor of Science (BS) from East Stroudsburg University in Early Childhood/Elementary Education and later earned her Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from the University of Pittsburgh. She has been teaching at The International School of Penang Uplands since 2014.

Maria Ves Hill
Maria Ves HillPrimary Teacher Year 3

Ves worked as an accountant and auditor for more than 15 years before going to Charles Darwin University in Australia to get her qualifications in teaching (Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning). She had taught in various International School in Asia. This is her second year in Uplands. She loves teaching and learning new things with her students. She and her family love exploring different countries, culture and meeting interesting and great people along the way.

A Malaysian citizen, Roopinder Kaur obtained her Bachelor of Teaching from Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. After qualifying as a teacher, she started her teaching career in Uplands. She has had 11 years’ experience
Teaching the IB Primary Programme. Roopinder has taught in Years 2, 4 and 5 respectively.

Helen Teese

Helen Teese, originally from Queensland, Australia, obtained her Teaching degree from a University in Brisbane. After qualifying as a teacher, she taught in schools in Queensland. Ms Teese came to Uplands from an international school in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Daniel Naidoo

Daniel Naidoo, originally from South Africa, rejoins us at Uplands after six months in the UK. Dan started his teaching career with three years teaching at a private all-boys school in Durban. He subsequently moved to London and spent almost a decade teaching Year 6 and Drama at an Independent Co-ed school. Having travelled extensively through Europe he decided to add Asia to his passport pages – the PYP curriculum at Uplands provided a perfect opportunity. Mr Naidoo spent two years teaching at the school, and then moved back to London. After much soul-searching he decided to return to Uplands- a place he calls home. He is currently teaching Year 6 and Drama from Years 4-6.

Tansy Dang

BSc (Hons), Dip Teaching

Tansy Dang, holds a Diploma in Teaching ESL and a BSc in Chemistry from University of Science Malaysia. Ms Dang taught English, Science and Mathematics in various primary and secondary schools in Penang for more than 10 years, before moving to the United States, and later to China where she taught in international schools. Ms Dang joined Uplands in 2007 and has since enjoyed teaching children in the Primary.

Mara Cary

PhD Virology, PGDE in Primary Education

After completing a PhD in Virology at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, Mara decided that teaching was a more interesting and exciting career choice. She completed a diploma programme in Primary Education (PGDE) whilst in Scotland and taught there for 1 year. Mara then continued her career teaching in international schools in several countries: Thailand, Sudan, Qatar and now Malaysia, over the course of 9 years. She loves the IB curriculum and truly believes in the values and principles at its core. Mara would like to continue teaching in IB schools for the remainder of her career in education.
Mara has thoroughly enjoyed her first year in Penang with her family and is looking forward to another exciting year at Uplands.

Jacqueline North

BSC, PGCE Primary specializing in maths

Jacqueline is originally from the UK, obtaining her degree in Psychology from Portsmouth University in the South of England. She then did her Primary PGCE in London and taught for a year in a Primary school in England before moving abroad in 2000. Jackie has taught in International Primary schools in Dubai, Malawi and Penang, where she first taught in St Christopher’s International Primary school, and has lived in Penang for over eleven years with her husband and two sons. She has been teaching at The International School of Penang (Uplands) since 2012.

Zita is originally from Slovakia. After finishing her Master’s degree in Education she spent ten years in the UK teaching in a couple of British schools, and seven years in an IB World School in Bratislava, Slovakia, where she led the Primary team as a PYP coordinator. She has been at Uplands since 2016.

Fernando Ramirez
Fernando RamirezPrimary Music Teacher

Fernando has been involved in music education for over 15 years. During his time as a professional musician playing the oboe in various European Symphony Orchestras, he continued to develop his passion for education as a visiting music teacher in schools in The Netherlands, Spain and the UK. In 2013 Fernando joined SEK International School Qatar, where he worked as PYP and MYP music teacher for four years. During this time, Fernando completed his PGCE with the University of Sunderland. Fernando is a firm believer of the benefits of the IB curriculum as a holistic educational model. In this respect, he has developed a deep understanding of the role music can play and the skills and conceptual understanding that can be fostered through music education. Fernando has led workshops and teacher training sessions in Doha, Amsterdam, Madrid and Dubai. Fernando has moved to Penang with his wife and two children.

Eduardo Cary

Physical Education and Sports Degree

Eduardo has been an International Educator for the past 12 years, having taught in Portugal, Scotland, Thailand, Sudan, Qatar and now Malaysia. He has been teaching the PYP programme in Physical Education for the past 5 years and is a strong believer in the core values of the programme. Eduardo has coached athletics, swimming and several team sports throughout his teaching career, including the preparation of primary FOBISIA teams. He has joined Uplands in 2016 and is enjoying his experience in Penang with his wife and two young boys.

Dean Metcalfe

Originally from Cumbria in North West England, Dean has been teaching for 16 years; working in Taiwan, South Korea, UK, Vietnam and Malaysia. Along with his family, he is returning to Uplands after 1 year back in the UK. He has a wealth of experience, having taught classes from Exam PE at IGCSE and A level right down to Reception. Dean is looking forward to taking up the HoY 7 & Y6 Transition and again being a part of what is thriving Roar Sports Programme. A keen sportsman in his junior years, he competed in a range of sports; representing Cumbria at Rugby Union, Hockey and Cross Country. Over the past 10 years he has taken part in a range of endurance running/triathlon events, always enjoying the process of training and preparation as much as the actual competing. He is already looking forward taking part in his 6th Penang Bridge Marathon in November. This will be his 7th year teaching Physical Education at Uplands.

Rosetta Zuko

Rosetta was born in Bangkok with a Vietnamese heritage, but grew up and educated in Alberta, Canada. She began teaching in Canada and transitioned into teaching internationally in Vietnam in 2011. She obtained her two Bachelor degrees from University of Alberta. She has worked in many different capacities as a classroom teacher across all year levels, science, math, visual arts, ICT, P.E. teacher, ESL and special needs. She feels very spirited about playing and coaching all different sports. Her first teaching experience was in gymnastics, for over a decade, she has taught all different ages and levels. Rosetta was a highly competitive gymnast with aspirations of joining the National Team in Canada. She is a passionate and successful coach in volleyball, basketball, badminton, track and field. Rosetta is looking forward to an exciting life at Uplands with her lovely husband and two children.

Ashleigh Grant

Ashleigh is originally from New Zealand but has spent the last two and a half years teaching in the United Kingdom. She has worked in many different capacities: classroom teacher across all year levels, Computing specialist and Physical Education specialist. Ashleigh will be joining the Physical Education department and has a particular strength in swimming, waterpolo and netball. We are looking forward to Ashleigh joining the team and the Uplands Community.

Ben Lim

Ben Lim is from Kulim, Kedah, Malaysia. He obtained his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) with Honours in Chemistry from the University Science Malaysia (USM), Penang, Malaysia. He was captain of USM Swim Team for 2 consecutive years. During his university life, he went to Chiang Mai, Thailand for the Asean University games in 2010 and Adelaide, Australia for RESCUE 2012, a lifesaving world championship in 2012.

Andre Double

Andre graduated from De Montfort University in England with a BSc in Sport and Leisure. This was immediately followed by a Post-Graduate Diploma in Sports Develop from Cheltenham and Gloucester. Andre arrived after an eight year spell at a rapidly improving Academy in the South Coast of England. He also spent three years previously working with ‘at risk’ pupils and those excluded from mainstream education in London. Having been one of the first ever years to take GCSE PE, Andre now teaches it alongside Mr Pearson. He is passionate about rugby, badminton and football. Andre joined us in 2014 and is hugely excited about the prospect of working in Asia and being a part of the well renowned FOBISIA games in the future.

Philip is from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. He graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Management majoring in Finance. He enjoys playing all kind of sports with swimming being his main sport. He has been involved in competitive swimming for 20 over years and is excited to share his knowledge and experience in the sport.

Johanna Maria Means
Johanna Maria MeansSEN (Primary)
M.Ed, B.C.S.E.s.

Johanna is originally from America, but has taught in the U.S.A., Kazakhstan, China and the United Arab Emirates. She holds a Masters of Special Education from the University of Pittsburgh and is Board Certified through the American Academy of Special Education Professionals. She worked for four years in America as a Behavior Specialist before moving overseas. She’s taught in pre-K and kindergarten classrooms and has been working as an Early Intervention Specialist in the UAE for the past two years. Johanna was also an organizer of the Abu Dhabi SEN CPD, which focuses on staff learning and development. She also has dedicated parent workshops to involve the community in understanding special needs and differentiation for all students.

After qualifying as a teacher, she has worked in the local setting for 10 years before joining Uplands in the year 2000. She has worked in many different capacities: Food Technology and ICT teacher across all year groups in Primary. Joyce has passion in cooking and enjoys the challenges of integrating Food Technology into the PYP.

Natalia is originally from Melbourne, Australia and has previously taught in Australia, New Zealand and Thailand. She has worked in many different capacities: Visual Arts and Drama/Dance specialist, Classroom Teacher across all Primary year levels, PE teacher, as well as with ESL and Learning Support Programmes. She is very passionate about the Arts and issues pertaining to sustainability. Natalia is here at Uplands with her husband and three children.

Florence Dass

Florence Philomenathan, from Kedah, Malaysia, obtained her degree in Arts (Malay Language major) from the University Science Malaysia (USM), Penang. She lectured in Malay Language and General Subjects at Tunku Abdul Rahman College (Johor and Penang) for a combined period of 2 years and 6 months. She has taught Malay at Uplands for 11 years to both Secondary and Primary students.

Farah Buruhanudeen

Farah hails from Penang, Malaysia. She graduated with an honours degree in Hospitality Management from Mara University of Technology, Shah Alam, Malaysia. After her graduation, she taught at KDU College, Kuala Lumpur followed by KDU College in Penang. Later she moved to Disted College Penang teaching Management subjects in the Hospitality Industry and also Bahasa Malaysia for Expatriate and local students. She has been a member of the languages departments of MRSM Balik Pulau in Penang and Mara University of Technology, also in Penang.

Rokiah Sulaiman

Rokiah Sulaiman received her Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics from the University of Nevada-Reno, USA, and Diploma in TESOL, Singapore. She has been working in Uplands School since 1989 as an ESL teacher, gaining considerable experience teaching students in both Primary and Secondary sections of the School. Rokiah has undergone IB training and especially enjoys the challenges of teaching English as a Second Languge as an integral part of the PYP programme. A Malaysian, she is married and has three children.

Oksana Sielena

Oksana comes from Ukraine, and Uplands is her first overseas teaching post. She obtained her teaching degree in English Language, Ukrainian Language and Literature, and Russian Literature. For 5 years Oksana taught in an IB school in her home country. She enjoys being active and uses her passion for sports and a healthy life style in her teaching,to inspire the inquiring young minds from all over the world. Apart from Oksana’s big adventure, connected with moving to a different continent, she has recently made a huge change in her personal life. She had been happily married for 3 weeks before it was time to move to Penang! Naturally she is looking forward to continuing her postponed honeymoon.

Angie graduated from University of Science of Malaysia (USM) and had since worked in multiple companies in the Semiconductor Industry. She later migrated to Australia with her family and obtained a Graduate Diploma of Teaching from Charles Darwin University, Darwin Australia. In Australia, Angie specialised in teaching Maths, English as Second Language (EAL) and Science from upper primary to Y12. She has recently returned to Penang with her family to teach in Uplands.

Sharlotte was appointed as the Head Librarian in 2012. She holds a Diploma in Library Management from LTSA, Australia, and the Diploma in Teaching Aide, Australia. She has been a member of the School since 1999. She has been an active member implementing PYP programme in the school and has contributed extensively into the development of both the libraries. She is a member of the International Schools’ Librarian Network. Sharlotte worked in an international school in Kuala Lumpur for 4 years before joining Uplands.

Rosie Sebastian

Rosie from Penang joined Uplands in 2000 as an Library assistant and worked her way up to Assistant Librarian. She enjoys working with the students and teachers in the library. Her passion for reading has helped out with recommending good reads to the students and teachers. She enjoys cooking, walking and watching Korean dramas.
Razlina Binti Abdul Rahim

Razlina from Penang, joined Uplands in 2015 as a Library assistant. Razlina’s caring nature makes it easier for her to work with the students and teachers in Uplands. Her experience in her previous work place was an added advantage for her in this school. Razlina’s favourite thing to do is read and travel to new and adventurous places.
David Johnston
David JohnstonCounsellor

After leaving school in 1976, David worked in Australia the US, South Africa and the UK as an Outdoor Education Instructor specializing in white water kayaking and rock climbing. He qualified as a Social Worker in 1993 and has worked therapeutically with young offenders and survivors of abuse for over 25 years. In 1998 he founded, and was the CEO of, Carevisions, currently the largest therapeutic childcare provider in Scotland. He has also worked for the National Health Service in the UK in the CAMHS team (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team). Prior to joining Uplands he worked for a year at Kodaikanal International School the top ranked International boarding school in India as the School Counsellor.
