Years 7 – 9 Art

Art and Design within the Years 7 to 9 is designed to be a period of exploration, during which students will learn about methods, media and techniques. A positive experience in this subject allows students to develop their own creativity and to look at themselves and their environment in new ways.

During these years students are provided with a basic understanding of the formal elements of Art and Design. This understanding enables students both to appreciate Art and to produce Artworks themselves. A positive experience in this subject allows students to develop their own creativity and to look at themselves and their environment in new ways. At the same time students are able to discover how Art is constantly interacting with other areas and connections are made between different parts of the school curriculum.

Art and Design within the Years 7 to 9 is designed to be a period of exploration, during which students will learn about methods, media and techniques. The development of Drawing and Painting skills will combine with work in Sculpture, Print-making and two and three-dimensional Design in order to provide the students with a broad experience of the subject.

At times students will work alone but this will be balanced by periods of working in close co-operation with other students in order to produce impressive examples of collaborative planning and execution.

Whether students are working alone or in groups their studies are arranged so that ideas can be examined from their root sources to final completion. Research into the Art of other people, often in different cultures and always working within different contexts, provides the starting point of almost all projects. Also students will be encouraged to reflect and evaluate their progress at all stages of their project’s execution.
