Years 7 – 9 English
The combined English language and literature course that students follow in Years 7-9 is designed to provide firm foundations from which the individual is able to move forward to externally examined courses in the Upper School.
We also hope that what we offer at Uplands will help to instil a life-long love of literature and an understanding of the important role that language plays in our lives.
Learning objectives are identified for each Year group, and our programme of study is designed to allow for both progression and review of content as part of a spiral curriculum.
We also work with our students’ speaking and listening skills, offering a range of activities and assessments that are designed to reinforce the importance of this aspect of communication.
As our students move through the Lower School, we aim to equip them with the language skills necessary to become effective communicators in today’s world. With this in mind, we focus on reading for meaning and for research purposes, and writing and speaking for specific audiences and purposes. We also work with our students’ listening skills, offering a range of activities and assessments to hone this particular skill.
For the more able student, we offer a range of opportunities for extension work. There is the opportunity for students to compete in the prestigious annual competitions for public speaking, elocution and debating.
From Year 7 onwards, we aim to offer our students a rich and exciting diet of English literature, including literature from a variety of cultures. Poetry, prose and drama texts are chosen with the interests of the students in mind, and the complexity of the texts studied is tailored to each Year level.
Many of our Lower School students are currently enjoying the opportunity to read works that are giving them a flavour of the range of writers that awaits them in the Upper School.
At all levels, we expect our students to be able to read, discuss and write about literary texts, and our teaching methods allow for students to develop more sophisticated responses to texts as they progress through the Lower School.
Our Year 9 literature course, in particular, has been designed to ensure that our students are ready for the demands of the IGCSE English Literature programme that they will encounter in the Upper School. We have identified a group of key texts that will help students think more deeply about literature and write in an informed and appropriate way. All students in Year 9 will study this group of texts, which includes a selected Shakespeare play, a prose text and poetry.
