Kebaikan dan Keburukan Telefon Pintar kepada Pelajar Sekolah (The advantages and disadvantages of using smartphones for school children)

Year 9 Malay First Language students have the opportunity to share the advantages and disadvantages of using Smartphones for school children. Before the presentation, students were given time to collaborate and discuss the pros and cons in a group by doing some research. This gives the opportunity for the students to share their thoughts in the target language and exchange ideas with other group members in a creative way.

Here are some reflections of students on the tasks:

Gia – I found the roleplay assignment to be very fun and interesting as not only did I get to learn about all the good and bad things about using a phone but I also got to work with my friends to create a piece of work we were all proud of as it helped us improve our skills in many aspects. We were given the chance to improve our writing skills and our communication skills as we needed to work in a team.

Eliza – The roleplay assignment was unlike other assignments we usually do in Malay and I think it helps to improve my fluency in Malay which is still developing. It was fun to create a storyline in a group and create a short story to demonstrate our knowledge of the topic we’re learning now.

Patricia – This assignment was a very fun and engaging experience. It allowed all the members on the team to work on it together which can test our cooperation and communication skills between all the members on our team. From this, I learnt a lot more about the negatives and positives in a fun way. It also tests our listening, writing, and speaking skills, which is a very helpful activity that we got to do.

Elysse – We all wrote a short play regarding the benefits and disadvantages of using a phone/the internet. Throughout this task, I learnt a lot more vocabulary and phrases. I had fun working with my friends and using my knowledge in this task.

Dhinesware – This experience for the role-play was really enjoyable since we get to share our ideas among our peers for what is suitable. This role play definitely helped us understand it better since it was a conversation among friends.

Ting – Each of us presented either the benefits or the negatives. In this task, we incorporated all of the phrases and vocabulary we learnt during class time and were able to successfully create our own play with little assistance. It was a fun task since we needed to cooperate with others and use our acting skills to present in front of the class.

Timothy – In our groups, we used the knowledge that we had gained throughout the unit on mobile phones to write a script, which involved the vocabulary that we also learned. In conclusion, this assignment helped us to develop our language skills both in writing and speaking, as well as creating an entertaining scenario to implement the main topic into.
