Secondary Heads of Faculty

Mark Loiterton
Mark LoitertonHead of Arts Faculty / Head of Drama / Drama Teacher
BA Dip Ed

Mark is originally from Wagga Wagga, Australia. After graduating from the University of New England, NSW, Mark worked for more than twenty years in a variety of schools in three different states in Australia, where he taught HSC and VCE English, Mathematics and Drama. He held Head of Year and Curriculum Coordinator and Assistant Principal positions during that time. Additionally, Mark was Outdoor Education Coordinator at a school in Canberra for seven years. Since moving overseas, Mark has taught at five international schools in the UK, China, Indonesia, Poland and Laos before coming to Uplands. Mark has taught IB Diploma Theatre and Mathematics and IB MYP Mathematics and Humanities. He has also been Head of Creative Arts and Dean of Students while teaching internationally. Mark is looking forward to teaching drama and collaborating with the arts department and the wider Uplands community as well as enjoying all that Penang and Malaysia has to offer.

Justine Bell
Justine BellHoF English and EAL Faculty
BA Hons in Literature and Performance in the Community, PGCSE in English, Drama and Media

Justine was born in Hong Kong and was educated there, in Kenya, France and the UK. Having decided that teaching was what she loved, Justine gained her PGCE from London Metropolitan University. She went on to work in London before deciding that she missed the warmth of Asia and headed to Uplands. Outside of school Justine enjoys travel, reading and sport.

Andrew North
Andrew NorthHoF Humanities / Geography
MA, PGCE, Geography

Andy North is currently Head of the Humanities Faculty at Uplands. He graduated from Aberdeen University with an MA Honours (2:1) in Geography and subsequently gained a PGCE. He taught for eight years in a large comprehensive school in Hampshire, UK, before moving into international education. Andy held positions of responsibility in the United Arab Emirates for three years and in Malawi for a further three years. He joined Uplands in August 2006 and lives in Penang with his wife, also a teacher, and two young sons.

Julie Tan
Julie TanHoF Mathematics / Mathematics Teacher
BSc. with Ed. (Hons)

Julie Tan, a Malaysian citizen, obtained her Bachelor of Science with Education (Honours) from University of Science, Malaysia and has extensive experience teaching Mathematics in the Secondary School up to IB level. Julie has provided a sense of stability and continuity to the Mathematics Faculty whilst open to changes and progress throughout the years.

Michael White
Michael WhiteHoF Sciences / Science Teacher
BSc., M.Ed, Dip Ed

Originally from Tasmania, Australia, after teaching Science, Maths and IT in Tasmania he headed overseas to teach in International schools, first in Oman, Dubai and Syria, then in Brunei and Indonesia. He has taught in American and British Style International Schools and has experience teaching IGCSE, A Level and IB Chemistry. He has always had an interest in the outdoors and appreciates the range of outdoor opportunities provided by travel from the deserts of Oman to the forests in Tasmania. He has a son in Year 8 and a daughter who just completed her IB.

Ria Davida Millington
Ria Davida MillingtonHoD Design Technology / DT Teacher
Ria was educated in her home country Barbados, as wellas in Scotland and in England. She completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Silversmithing and Metalwork, a PGCE (Secondary) in Design Technology and a Master of Arts in International Education.
Ria has worked in London, Jakarta and Hong Kong. She has experience teaching the English National Curriculum (Key Stage 3 & 4), providing guidance to students under the AQA, Edexcel, OCR and now Cambridge exam boards. She has also taught the IB Middle Years Programme and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
She is happy to have joined the Uplands family and the Design and Technologies faculty. Outside of school she enjoys travelling to learn about new cultures and ways of life.
Gary Zuko
Gary ZukoHoF PE / Head of Secondary PE / Year 9 Tutor
BPE; BEd; M Education Science and Health

Gary is originally from Alberta, Canada. He is a retired administrator that has pursued his career in coaching University Basketball in Canada and Professional Basketball for the Saigon Heat in HCMC. As of this year, “Zuko” was recruited to work for the UFC-Asia as a master in MMA and is currently creating curriculum and education programs for coaches, trainers and fighters in Vietnam. He obtained his education degree from the University of Alberta and working on his PhD in Exercise Science, Health and Physical Education at the University of Victoria. He has played university volleyball, basketball and junior football with a walk on with the Seahawks back in the ‘80s. He has a lifetime of sports and aquatics experiences at all possible levels. He enjoys playing golf and watching movies on his down time. Zuko is looking forward living in Penang with his amazing wife and two beautiful children.

Karin Raffa
Karin RaffaHoF Languages / Residential House Parent
1st State Examination Modern Languages, PGCE Modern Foreign Languages, MA Education

Originally from Berlin, Germany, she holds a degree in Modern Foreign Languages and earned her MA Education from Edge Hill University. She has taught in schools in the UK, Switzerland and Germany before moving to South East Asia. She is a residential boarding parent and joined Uplands with her two daughters.
