The International School of Penang (Uplands) is extremely proud of its multicultural staff, boasting fifteen different nationalities amongst their academic faculties. Our staff know the importance of intellectual engagement, communication skills, leadership, and focus on student growth and discovery.
Secondary Heads of Faculty
Ian McGill has been a teacher of Art for thirty years. He has taught in British schools, international schools, two colleges of Art and a university, on four continents, and has worked on each continent twice. Ian has taught within the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (15 years), the IB Middle Years Programme (6 years), under the Cambridge Examinations Board (20 years), and within the state educational systems of places as diverse as the Caribbean, China and Mexico.

Justine was born in Hong Kong and was educated there, in Kenya, France and the UK. Having decided that teaching was what she loved, Justine gained her PGCE from London Metropolitan University. She went on to work in London before deciding that she missed the warmth of Asia and headed to Uplands. Outside of school Justine enjoys travel, reading and sport.
MA, PGCE, Geography
Andy North is currently Head of the Humanities Faculty at Uplands. He graduated from Aberdeen University with an MA Honours (2:1) in Geography and subsequently gained a PGCE. He taught for eight years in a large comprehensive school in Hampshire, UK, before moving into international education. Andy held positions of responsibility in the United Arab Emirates for three years and in Malawi for a further three years. He joined Uplands in August 2006 and lives in Penang with his wife, also a teacher, and two young sons.
BSc. with Ed. (Hons)
Julie Tan, a Malaysian citizen, obtained her Bachelor of Science with Education (Honours) from University of Science, Malaysia and has extensive experience teaching Mathematics in the Secondary School up to IB level. Julie has provided a sense of stability and continuity to the Mathematics Faculty whilst open to changes and progress throughout the years.
Originally from Tasmania, Australia, after teaching Science, Maths and IT in Tasmania he headed overseas to teach in International schools, first in Oman, Dubai and Syria, then in Brunei and Indonesia. He has taught in American and British Style International Schools and has experience teaching IGCSE, A Level and IB Chemistry. He has always had an interest in the outdoors and appreciates the range of outdoor opportunities provided by travel from the deserts of Oman to the forests in Tasmania. He has a son in Year 8 and a daughter who just completed her IB.
Was educated in her home country Barbados, in Scotland and in England. She completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Silversmithing and Metalwork, a PGCE (Secondary) in Design Technology and a Master of Arts in International Education.
Ria has worked in London, Jakarta and Hong Kong. She has experience teaching the English National Curriculum (Key Stage 3 & 4) providing guidance to students under the AQA, Edexcel, OCR and now Cambridge exam boards. She has also taught the IB Middle Years Programme and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
She is happy to have joined the Uplands family and the Design and Technologies faculty. Outside of school she enjoys travelling to learn about new cultures and ways of life.
