MIDDLE
SCHOOL
We are delighted to share that Uplands has achieved the status of being an MYP Candidate School, marking an important milestone in our educational journey.

Introduction
Uplands Middle Years
Uplands became an MYP Candidate school in June 2023. The International Baccalaureate’s goal is to provide adolescent students with the values and opportunities that will enable them to develop sound judgments, make wise choices, and respect others in the global community. The programme builds upon the skills and learning developed in the IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) and develops subject-area understandings that allow students to thrive through the rigours of our High School pathways – IGCSE, and IBDP balanced with the development of skills that will allow them to learn, grow and flourish holistically. The IB MYP also connects classroom pedagogical practices and content to the world outside, through the Global Contexts and the Learner Profile.
The Lower Secondary programme for Years 7-9 offers a broad range of subjects that aims to develop strong foundations in a variety of academic disciplines. As students move through their Middle Years, we know they need a programme that builds core understandings that will allow them to thrive through the academic rigours of IGCSE and IBDP, balanced with the development of skills that will allow them to learn, grow and flourish holistically.

Years Philosophy
Uplands Middle Years emphasises holistic learning.
We feel a Middle Years Programme should expose students to as many different subjects, skills and experiences as possible, so that students will learn to see knowledge as an interrelated whole. Students should have the opportunity to show their various strengths, while being rewarded for them and gaining a sense of personal achievement.
Uplands Middle Years emphasises intercultural awareness and communication.
In our community, it is essential that the curriculum reflects and is responsive to the different perspectives of all our students. It should also guide them in forming their own international outlook. This implies an emphasis on communication skills both in multiple languages and communication within specific subjects.
Uplands Middle Years is student-centered.
It is vital that students develop an awareness of their own learning process and the necessary skills to continue learning throughout life. The curriculum seeks to shift the emphasis from teacher-led instruction to student-led learning wherever possible.

Curriculum
Our internationally-minded Year 7-9 programme is underpinned by the practice of inquiry, nurturing students to be open-minded risk-takers who are reflective and balanced. It focuses on the practical development of the student skills needed to become successful independent learners who progress, are curious, enjoy learning, and achieve academically and personally. Our curriculum is purposefully designed to help students become confident, responsible global citizens who make a positive contribution to our community.
Uplands Middle School programme is broad in its subjects and skills. In each of the three years, students study English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Sciences, Physical and Health Education, Individuals and Societies, Design Technology, Visual and Performing Arts, Bahasa Malaysia, and their choice of Language Acquisition.
At the heart of the Year 7-9 programme is our pastoral care system designed to holistically support our students. The RESPECT programme guides our students into being global-minded, respectful, and principled members of society. Each student is a part of a small cohort of students who remain together through their secondary school years. This small group is led by a teacher who serves as a tutor for their adolescent experience. Together, the tutor groups navigate the dynamic ups and downs of the lower secondary middle years.
Student Experience
The middle-years student experience is focused on opportunity and variety. Our campus offers diverse academic challenges, including fully equipped design labs, art and music studios, and black box theaters.
