Secondary Heads of Year

Dean Metcalfe
Dean MetcalfePE/Swimming Teacher, CCA Coordinator, HoY 7 & Y6 Transition
BA(Hons), PGCE/QTS, PGC Sport & Culture

Originally from Cumbria in North West England, Dean has been teaching for 16 years; working in Taiwan, South Korea, UK, Vietnam and Malaysia. Along with his family, he is returning to Uplands after 1 year back in the UK. He has a wealth of experience, having taught classes from Exam PE at IGCSE and A level right down to Reception. Dean is looking forward to taking up the HoY 7 & Y6 Transition and again being a part of what is thriving Roar Sports Programme. A keen sportsman in his junior years, he competed in a range of sports; representing Cumbria at Rugby Union, Hockey and Cross Country. Over the past 10 years he has taken part in a range of endurance running/triathlon events, always enjoying the process of training and preparation as much as the actual competing. He is already looking forward taking part in his 6th Penang Bridge Marathon in November. This will be his 7th year teaching Physical Education at Uplands.

Lynsey Collis
Lynsey CollisHead of Year 8 and 9, Accreditation Coordinator, TOK and Global Perspectives Teacher
BEd. (Hons) Drama and Music

Initially leaving the U.K with just her partner and a suitcase in 1999, Lynsey is now married and has 2 daughters aged 9 and 4 yrs old. Since leaving the U.K Lynsey has taught in Zanzibar, Tanzania, Bangkok, Thailand and most recently Beijing, China. She likes to think of herself as a ‘jack of all trades’ having taught children from 6 to 18 years old in the subjects of English, Drama, Music, History and Geography. Most recently she has enjoyed the mental challenge of teaching IB TOK and IGCSE Global Perspectives, as well as being able to build more personal relationships with her role as a Head of Year. Now in her fourth year at Uplands, she takes great pleasure in being able to see her students mature and graduate through the different phases of the Secondary school.

Anna Corney
Anna CorneyEnglish/ ESL / HoY 10 & 11
Anna Corney comes to Uplands with almost 25 years’ experience teaching in one of Australia’s most prestigious Independent schools, Methodist Ladies’ College in Melbourne. During her time at MLC Anna held various leadership roles including Head of English and Head of Year for several years. She has a double major in English Literature and Politics from Monash University and completed her Diploma of Education from the University of Melbourne after a short period working in the fashion industry. More recently, motivated by a keen interest in research methodologies and learning pedagogies, she completed her Masters of Education in Teacher Librarianship. Anna has crafted a career out of inquiry-based teaching and learning practices, and the use of digital learning technologies in the classroom. Outside of the classroom, Anna has helped run term-long residential learning programs in rural Victoria and more recently led cultural exchanges to remote Aboriginal communities on the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory. Anna enjoys running, hiking, yoga, theatre and of course literature. She is passionate about pastoral care and social justice, hence her leadership roles in the Pastoral Care review at Uplands and as secretary of the Staff Forum which ensures that every member of staff at Uplands has a voice.
David Peake
David PeakePsychology / PE Science / TOK / HoY 12 & 13
David Peake studied a Bachelor of Applied Science (Human Movement) in Ballarat, Australia where he developed a love for Exercise Physiology and Sport Psychology. He subsequently completed his Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) and commenced his career in education. After an initial year teaching Physical Education in Geelong he was employed by Kardinia International College. During his 17 years at Kardinia he taught Level A-E Science and Phys Ed as well as VCE Psychology and Human Development. He has taught IB Psychology since 2004 and more recently joined their TOK team. During his tenure he was convener of swimming and badminton and was their IB Extended Essay Coordinator. David has a great passion for the outdoors and team sports. After walking Kokoda in 2014, David was inspired to explore teaching opportunities abroad. He is joined in Penang by his wife and three children and the Peake’s are delighted to be a part of the Uplands community.
